North Carolina Governor Bev Purdue is about to sign the House Bill smoking ban into effect. The bill will make it illegal for smokers to smoke cigarettes in privately owned businesses. I personally have never smoked anything but one cigar in my whole life (and that was not something that will ever be repeated), and the reason is that I hate the stuff. But smokers have the right to smoke if they choose to, even if the rest of us don’t like cigarette smoke.
Think about it. The government has decided to make a decision that affects every bar and restaurant in North Carolina, intruding into the free market yet again, declaring cigarette smoking “bad”, “saving” us from the “evils” of that “dirty habit”. But where does it end? Who is next on their list? What is the next “evil” behavior that they will ban? Drinking? Praying? Gathering in groups of two or more? Where does it end? When will the government find you guilty of some offensive behavior, and declare your activities to be illegal? Don’t think it won’t happen. We need to call our representatives and let them know we do not approve of their intrusions. I urge you to call, write and vote.
